Applying beard oil: this is how to do it correctly

Using beard oil is easy, but how you apply it makes a difference. If you use too much, your beard may feel greasy. If you use too little or distribute the oil only over the outside of your beard, it will not reach the skin beneath your beard as effectively. But how should you applying beard oil, how much do you need, and what is the best time?

In this guide, we explain step by step how to use beard oil. That way, you can get more out of your daily beard-care routine, whether you have short stubble, a full beard, or a long beard.

What is beard oil?

Beard oil is a grooming product for your beard hairs and the skin beneath your beard. A good beard oil helps keep your beard soft, supple, and well-groomed.

Velihan Beardcare's beard oil consists of a combination of nourishing oils, including jojoba oil and argan oil. The lightweight formula absorbs quickly and does not feel unnecessarily heavy or sticky. This makes it easy to incorporate beard oil into your daily routine.

Beard oil is also not only intended for men with long beards. You can use beard oil even when you have just started growing your beard or wear a short beard.

How should you apply beard oil?

It is best to distribute beard oil evenly over both the beard hairs and the skin underneath. So, you should not apply the oil only to the outside of your beard.

Start with a small amount of beard oil in the palm of your hand. Gently rub your hands together so that the oil is distributed across your palms and fingers.

Then massage the oil through your beard with your fingers. Start at the skin beneath your beard and work outward from there. Then distribute the oil along the full length of your beard hairs, all the way to the tips.

Do you have a longer beard? Then also run your fingers through your beard from underneath. This makes it easier to reach the skin and the hairs deeper inside your beard.

When is the best time to apply beard oil?

One of the best times to use beard oil is after showering. Warm water helps remove dirt and excess oil from your beard and skin, allowing you to start your grooming routine with a clean beard.

Gently dry your beard after showering. You do not need to rub the hairs vigorously with a towel. It is better to pat your beard dry and, if necessary, let it air-dry a little longer.

You can apply beard oil when your beard is dry or still slightly damp. It is best not to apply it when there is still a lot of water in your beard, as this can make it more difficult to distribute the oil evenly.

Not showering in the morning? No problem. You can also simply use beard oil on a clean, dry beard.

How much beard oil should you use?

The right amount of beard oil varies from person to person. The length and density of your beard in particular determine how much oil you need.

With a short beard, you only need a small amount. As your beard grows longer and fuller, you can gradually use a little more.

Always start with a small amount. After distributing the oil, you can feel whether your beard feels sufficiently cared for. If not, you can add a small amount.

After applying the oil, your beard should feel soft and well-groomed, but not soaked or noticeably greasy. Do your hands remain very greasy after applying it, and does your beard shine strongly? Then you have probably used more than necessary.

Applying beard oil to a short beard

With a short beard, it is especially important to reach the skin beneath the beard as well. You therefore do not need to use much beard oil.

Spread a small amount over your fingers and gently massage the oil over the skin and through the short beard hairs. Because the hairs are still short, you can easily distribute the oil evenly.

Even with stubble, a small amount of beard oil can be part of your grooming routine. So you do not have to wait until you have a long or full beard.

Applying beard oil to a long beard

With a long or full beard, distributing the oil requires a little more attention. A common mistake is to apply beard oil only to the visible outside of the beard.

Therefore, work from different directions. First massage the oil toward the skin with your fingertips. Then work through your beard from underneath and distribute the remaining oil over the lengths and ends.

The ends especially deserve attention, as longer beard hairs can feel drier there.

After applying the oil, you can use a beard brush or beard comb. This distributes the oil further through the beard while also shaping the hairs.

Apply beard oil first or brush your beard first?

You can briefly comb your beard before applying the oil to untangle knots and separate loose hairs. However, for actually distributing the beard oil, it is helpful to first apply the oil and then brush or comb.

First massage the oil into your beard with your hands. Then use a beard brush or beard comb to distribute the oil further through the hairs.

A beard brush is also useful for getting loose hairs to point in the same direction. A beard comb can be especially helpful for longer beards and more precise styling.

How often should you apply beard oil?

For most men, using beard oil once a day is a good starting point. Applying it daily is easy to combine with your morning or evening routine.

That doesn't mean every beard needs exactly the same care. For example, a short beard needs less product than a long, full beard. The season, your skin, and how dry your beard feels can also have an influence.

Does your beard already feel soft and well-groomed throughout the day? Then there's no need to keep applying oil. Using more beard oil doesn't automatically produce a better result.

Can you apply too much beard oil?

Yes. Although beard oil is intended to care for your beard, you can use more than your beard needs.

With too much oil, your beard can feel greasy and heavy. It may also become much shinier than desired. This is usually a sign that you can use less next time.

Therefore, start with a small amount. Adding more oil is easy; removing excess oil from your beard is much more difficult.

Using beard oil and beard balm together

You can also combine beard oil and beard balm. This is especially useful when you have a medium-length or long beard and want more control over its shape in addition to conditioning.

In that case, apply apply the beard oil first. Massage it thoroughly through the beard and give the oil a short time to absorb. Then you can use a small amount of beard balm to care for the beard further and shape it.

After that, you can optionally use a beard brush or beard comb to distribute everything neatly.

Common mistakes when using beard oil

One of the most common mistakes is simply using too much beard oil. Another mistake is distributing the oil only over the outside of the beard. Don't forget that the skin beneath your beard is also part of your grooming routine.

You also don't need to automatically reapply beard oil several times a day. Pay attention to what your beard needs and adjust the amount accordingly.

Finally, consistency is more important than using a large amount. A small amount distributed thoroughly throughout the entire beard is usually more pleasant than using a lot of oil at once.

Applying beard oil in 5 simple steps

Using beard oil should ultimately take only a few minutes. Remember this order:

  1. Make sure your beard is clean and dry or slightly damp.
